We have an unfinished back yard. We are in the process of putting in an actual back yard, which will consist of pavers and some grassy areas.
We have a gas bbq grill on the back deck.
We have a window air conditioning unit for the rental bedroom, and fans that can be used in the summer.
In the winter we do not overheat the house. The way our heating system works heats the bedrooms/outer rooms more than the central shared spaces [living, dining, and kitchen]. We try to keep the bedrooms at a comfortable temperature, but we generally live on the cool side.
Our daughter lives with us, in one "wing" of the house. She works as well.
